Magazine Weekend: Self Magazine January '10

You can probably read me like a deck of cards. I'm following suit. The most of my hand contained NOTD's galore and so of course you need to learn how to take care of it (your hand that is).

While reading Self's January issue with Carrie Underwood on the cover, I snagged some new year moves to make a new fit me for the next days of the rest of my life! (This is the extra caffeine talking).

The magazine gives you hints on how to create your perfect part in your hair (I know if I make mine uneven too much I resemble a misshaped poodle), the latest purple lip shades on the market and straight from the trendlines (as in headlines), and more. Of course they always have their weight loss challenges and tips from celebrities to stay in shape and eat healthy. As redundant as the topics can be, I can honestly say I rely on this magazine to give me fresh tips each time I flip a page.

Here I am sharing some tips from Roopika Malhotra's article on how to take care of your hands. They often take the beating because we wear down our sense of touch nearly the most, right? When was the last time your eyes, your taste buds, your sniffer, or your ears took a beating like your hand did while carrying shopping bags, opening a can of soda, prying open a jar of pickles, wrestling with store hangers, paper cuts, and the list goes on! Use these four easy tips to take matters into your own hands! :)

Magazine Weekend: Fitness Magazine Jan '10

So now that we are back in full swing at MOJ, I am at the ready with plenty a Magazine Weekend mention for how to keep your winter full of tips and minimize your lack of knowledge on beauty and... warmth.

When I was younger, I couldn't understand how I would be going out with friends and would find others wearing a simple hoodie, or a light jacket and I was the one standing looking like the Michellin man with my bubble jacket, mittens, ear muffs, a hat, ski looking pants, and more. How were these people not immediately transforming into icicles? Then I got older.

Between meeting the honey (who always looks like he needs to be wearing 2 more jackets but is actually nearly always warm), and observing others, I have learned the tricks to layering clothes without looking like a bear, as well as feeling like a twig about to fly away and freeze.

MOJ Magazine Weekend

Thanks to my favorite winter jacket, I can skip the second step in this tip from Fitness Magazine's January issue and wear a butter soft long sleeve top (my favorites are the super thin cotton 3/4 sleeve tops at Uniqlo) under my jacket. But I will make sure to use this tip when I am trying to look extra cute with my feather light trench coats (which have no inkling of warmth). The best part about all this (other than being warm)? You can make use of all your fancy summer tees, your fall cardigans, and your winter jackets! Talk about seasonless attire!

I'd also check out the rest of the magazine if I were you. They have great fitness pointers, a chart about how effective your working out is if you are alone, at home, with a friend, etc. Some other great info? I learned whether or not you can really lose weight the day before an event, and which snow activities burn the most calories (how do you feel about sledding)?

How do you layer?

Magazine Weekend: Guess Who's Back?

Magazine WeekendBeing that I'm flipping from technological device to other device, I have not been able to do the same Magazine Weekend you might be accustomed to. But I am trying to keep y'all on your toes to make sure you're in the know and interested.

Being that 2009 came to a close at a rapid pace, y'all probably took enough advice and tips to last you halfway through the new year. So enjoy this.

Guess who's back?! Jennifer Garner!! Wife to Ben Affleck and mother to Violet and Seraphina (okay yes, I'm a bit too into her personal life - can't help it - the girls are dolls!), the hot mama has also had plenty a chance to display her acting chops. Think Alias, Daredevil, 13 Going on 30, and my personal favorite; The Kingdom.

She took a hiatus from the Hollywood scene to focus on her ladies club at home, and from what I can see, she is doing great. I'm loving the sultry and fashionable looks she is sporting in W Magazine. Have y'all snagged a copy yet? I'm always feeling super special with a copy of the W in hand - they print on bigger size glossies than the norm and have some fab photo shoots. But you probably already knew that.

Magazine Weekend: Over in India

Magazine WeekendWhen I pass a cover of Maxim I am accustomed to seeing a bikini shot. Always. Anything less would surely be surprising. So imagine my surprise witnessing Maxim India with Sameera Reddy, Bollywood maven smoldering with less skin showing.

Mama always taught Yaya that a shoulder will get more than baring the belly, and showing some leg accomplishes more than booty. I can't say that I've always been a modest girl scout, but I do have to admit that as I grow younger with every year (only things that grow old are wine and cheese!), I see that tidbit pay for itself more and more.

I always think to myself if I knew then what I know now, just how much more fabulous I would've been.

Well enough about me though, I will be doing my best to do Magazine Weekend for US and International magazines as well, check out the stunner for this week.

Neckin' on the Covers

Magazine WeekendThe maxi necklace. The bib. The multi-chain. Starting to sound familiar? I'm talking about the new craze to dress up the necks of day workers and debutantes alike.

I remember when layering two necklaces was a big deal following after Miss Carrie a la Sex in the City. Following the bigger is better mentality, us gals have kept up with the trend. Right? I have.

There are the necklaces with mixed beads and materials looking like bibs (and thus aptly named so) with a piece of felt usually holding the design together, wrapping around you with a ribbon. Then there are the stone ones, garnering plenty attention, looking like something from the Queen's collection. Then there are the gaggles of chains collected together, sometimes mixed with rhinestones, pearls, and various stones, looking like a gem filled string of sausage links. Of course, that can spread to multi strands at different layers, encompassing the whole area of your upper body, and the list continues forever.

So you can imagine my enjoyment when I was trolling my favorite magazine sites Cover Awards and MagXone to see so many winter covers sport the various styles.

Magazine Weekend: Amber's VIBE

Magazine WeekendI'm glad to come back to Magazine Weekend on MOJ to compliment the work that VIBE magazine put out. If y'all followed the news and my Twitter, you would've heard my serious dismay at the magazine folding, and then my excitement into their online mag ventures. But coming out with new issues? I'm not clear on the specifics but I can most definitely say they are coming back with a bang.

Right as their doors closed shut, their Christina Milian and The Dream cover was the last. Admittedly, I was disappointed with the artwork/photography for said cover, but my loyalty ran deeper than that. I also heard that they were about to go overboard for an MJ dedication issue, but never got the chance. The offices were several floors below my job, and it was a bit sad to see the elevator doors open to bare walls instead of larger than life past covers, or see Maino riding upstairs.

But no mas with the reminiscing. My magazine is beyond redemption and back on it's A game with their Amber Rose photo shoot. I know this is a civilization when we are all too happy to assign fame to people who did nothing to deserve it, but I think this gal has flavor and can rock a dress or whatever else to tongue-wagging results. I also love a woman strong enough to rock a close shaven head (because I sure as hell can't). That and I have to say I like her modeling gigs, have no interest in her personal life, annnddd.... well who am I to be a hater? Don't hate, Congratulate!

Magazine Weekend: People Style Watch November 09

PhotobucketHow's your weekend going so far? I'm getting caught up in American football as I spend the day watching tv flipping from channel to channel and oohing and ahhing at highlight reels and tackles. Some of the time is spent on Twitter taunting friends who like opposing teams, and the rest is spent sending my cheerleading chants to the teams I'd like to win! What do you spend your Sundays doing?

The weekend continues with People Style Watch, a favorite of mine I continue to pick snippets out of. You can see the previous features here.

Never heard of the handy dandy mag? This magazine is the fashionista sister of People magazine, with tips and features of celebrity and wallet friendly styles, along with trends, new brand features, compilations, and our favorite: coupons! The back page of the magazine is chock full of coupon codes for over 50 well known companies in this one for November, and some until the end of the year. If anything, this baby is worth the money for all the savings it'll bring ya! (Don't believe me? They have codes for a minimum of 20% from places such as Banana Republic, CVS, etc.)

Magazine Weekend: 944 November 09

PhotobucketHappy weekend y'all! I am coming back with a vengeance this month trying to give you snippets from magazines that you haven't heard of, or at least those I have yet to mention. Trust me when I say there is a monthly stack of 15 or more magazines vying for MOJ readers attention!

This weekend starts off with 944, the Miami division. They cover a lot of popular US areas, but I must've developed a penchant for the sunny state as I always find the Miami read the best. This one had a great list of eating advice from Jodi Lipper and Cerina Vincent, authors of How to Eat Like a Hot Chick: Eat What You Love, Love How You Feel. The page in the magazine gave nine tips, but I compiled my top three. I especially love the last one.

The magazine always has great covers and amazing photo shoots. This issue has a "Night at the Museum" themed shoot with a model posing with animal figures and fab makeup (think leopard spots, stripes, etc.), and a va va voom shoot of lingerie in a supersexed up (but ultra classy) version of the Mad Men set in the shoot "Longing."

Magazine Weekend - Real Simple October '09

PhotobucketI know I know, it is most definitely the first day of November, but being that I was behind on my magazine weekend, I had about ten more magazines to give to you and one and a half days. Add to that the fact that there is plenty of football and junk food to eat on a weekend, and you have a girl that doesn't like to be around a computer much. (I'm typing this as I get my ice cream ready by the way).

To give you a snippet, I wanted to let you know how to do your own Bride-tastic hair from BRIDES, and how to give a good compliment from Esquire. None of this made the print for this post though, and instead, I looked through Real Simple and found a great list of things to do to prevent wrinkling in your clothes. We all wash our clothes right? And to make each dry a perfect dry, and not an expensive 'Oh my, I have to go back to the dry cleaners and spend all my money' trip.

The magazine always has great cheap lists of easy dinners. Overall, this is a magazine that includes information from every sphere someone would need to know. They don't overindulge on one thing, and you walk away a knowledgeable reader. This mag is my equivalent of a book sometimes.

Photobucket

Have you ever heard of these tips to prevent wrinkles? I'll be trying it out soon!

Magazine Weekend - Allure October '09

PhotobucketHappy Halloween everyone! I don't know how many of you partake in the festivities, but I take it as a day to be extra fun. Plus with all negative thoughts aside (poison etc.) I think kids need a day or two like this where they can get dressed up and get free candy. The adults? They need a day to think back to the days of childhood past and take those ties off and relax. I don't know how Halloween turned into a competition for the shortest skirt, but that's what makes the day more fun, no? Finding the most creative costume that didn't use a "lack of fabric" as the first step! In the past, I've had a theme going, where I was Betty Boop one year and Betty Rubble (Flinstones) the next. I had a couple of Bettys in mind for this year as well, but I don't think I'll be dressing up. Next year watch out!

As you guys await November 1 for the sale candy (that's the best part of the day for me!), take a look through the magazine counters and check for Allure for October 09. It has Miss Vanessa Hudgens on the cover, looking a lot like MiMi (a.k.a Mariah Carey. The magazine is always well known for having an index card pullout with tons of tips. Sometimes fitness, sometimes beauty. These pullout cards have the directions on one side and product suggestions on the other. They serve as great bookmarks, and when you're done with the magazine, you can hide the card in your bag or wallet, and head to the (drug)store to do some damage!

This month they had a chock full of advice from how to do successful blow outs at home to grooming your brows. Instead of just one page of full tear outs, you get a full three pages!

Photobucket

Do you do this to groom your brows? Does it work? Success/Horror stories? Share all!

Magazine Weekend: People Style Watch Oct 09

PhotobucketMagazine weekend returns today with a bang! I am a bit saddened about September missing out on Magazine weekend, but I can't say it was possible. See, with the presence of NYFW, and my birthday, followed by my Florida trip and the Bloggin' Beauts event, today is the only possible day I could bring it to y'all. I know you missed it, so I won't stretch it out more than needed.

This weekend starts with People Style Watch. Jennifer Aniston is on the cover, along with titles of articles such as '359 Looks You'll Love.' I really like how this young magazine is coming along with tips on how to wear the most stylish designs, as well as cheaper versions of celebrity getups.

I take to this magazine for a lot of new brand and designer insight, as they are sure to be the ones that give you a quick head's up, and this time around, they also have a couple of pages dedicated to Breast Cancer Research/Awareness and the companies supporting the cause.

If you read on, you will see I chose the article giving you the Five Simple Rules of Natural Makeup. Make sure to snag, or recycle & reuse a friends copy to catch all their product recommendations and the rest of the explanations to each rule. And of course, to let me know what you think!

Magazine Weekend - Women's Health September 09

Hey y'all! Happy weekend!

No weekend goes by without a magazine to accompany it, right? Well this weekend, we are exploring the phenomenon that happens all the time. Very often you hear people complaining about not being able to find the right shade of lipstick or lip gloss, and saying that though it looked good on someone else, or in the bottle, it looked terrible on them.

Well, Women's Health (the September issue) has some good pointers at picking out just the right color and the most flattering shade for you. They also have a great interview with covergirl Mila Kunis. Click 'read more' to read the tip and see what else the magazine has for curious readers!

Here's two tips from the magazine for figuring out if you're warm toned or cool toned (a key part in choosing a color), and how best to test out the color before committing to buying it:

Photobucket

Also from the mag:
"80% of women have cool undertones, but don't assume that you do."

Check out the magazine for the guide on which shades go with cool and warm skin tones, along with the colors that are universally flattering. Also - check out which colors the guide says to avoid!

Magazine Weekend: Cosmopolitan August 09

Happy Saturday, the weekend is here!!

Magazine Weekend continues with double the magazine in a day. I don't know if y'all can or can't handle it but I will ween you into it as I have turned into a magazine junkie.

The clip for the rest of today is from Cosmopolitan magazine for August 09. Again. The first one can be read here. But this was a can't miss y'all.

I know a lot of the beauty junkies out there are a fan of lining their inner eyes. Sometimes people don't do it because their eyes water, because they're scared of poking their eye out, etc. But is it safe? Here's your answer!

Magazine Weekend: Shape Magazine Aug 09

Happy Sunday!!

Magazine Weekend continues with double the magazine in a day. This tidbit is coming as a 2 for 2 on a completed week. Hope y'all had a great week of reading MOJ and taking care of business (anyone else singing along?)!

This tidbit right here is from Shape Magazine'sAugust issue. The cover maven is Jada Pinkett-Smith on the cover to promote her new series on TNT HawthoRNe.

The love and admiration that I have for Miss Jada can be a never-ending love letter, but alas, that is not the topic of the day. Let me quickly reiterate how beautiful and on top of her game she is though... Ok done.

This tidbit is a mind trick to re-motivate yourself and keep going. I know a lot of times we reach plateaus and easily fall back into being couch potatoes watching nonstop reality television. Here's the push if you needed it, and if not - here's what you've been doing right!

Photobucket

The magazine has a super sexy shoot of Jada that is well worth the magazine purchase. Or check out their site!

Magazine Weekend: Self Magazine Aug '09

Happy Sunday!!

Magazine Weekend continues with double the magazine in a day. I'm bringing some goodies to y'all on a continuous basis, so if you're not really enjoying it, I'll only know if you let me know. There are so many tidbits I come across and I love to share.

This tidbit right here is from Self Magazine's August issue. The cover maven is Zooey Deschamel on the cover to promote her movie 500 Days of Summer.

The magazine is also great at having pages of tips and tricks throughout each issue. They call it "____ Flash" the space being a variation of Beauty, Fitness, and others. Below are two that I found interesting and recommend you pick up a copy for other good pointers!

Photobucket

The magazine also has a great article by Francesca Castagnoli called "How I Got Over My Green Guilt." and an ode to Zoeey with "31 Days of Summer."

Magazine Weekend - Complex Aug/Sept 09

Happy Saturday!!

Magazine Weekend continues with double the magazine in a day. I'm bringing some goodies to y'all on a continuous basis, so if you're not really enjoying it, I'll only know if you let me know.

Let the festivities continue then! This Saturday morning, I'm drooling over the genius of Complex magazine for August/September 09. They have Keri Hilson on one cover and Kid Cudi on the back. In addition, they have interviews with Fabolous and Amber Rose. I will admit right now that I am not a fan of all of the above, but I will have to give credit where credit is due - and it is due for the images.

Keri Hilson being a bad mamajama. I'm loving the cage booties and the neon nails. The whole photo shoot is also pretty awesome with its comic book remix.

Amber Rose is one bad B. I love nearly every photo shoot she does, no matter how much booty is flaunted. Can't hate on others for looking good! Plus I admire her for her daring fashion sense & the I don't really give a damn facial expressions lol.

Kid Cudi - I have to admit I'm not much of a fan. But this photo shoot, with the crazy illustrations a la Where the Wild Things Are was keeping me attached to every word. Learned some things about the guy I never knew!

So this weekend started off with a bang and less clip and more of a kudos to Complex. This magazine is definitely a must read, and if you can't get your hands on a copy, head over to the site pronto!

The clip for the rest of today is from Cosmopolitan magazine for August 09. See? I'm definitely switching it up! The clip for today is less an article that I found and more of a quote that was most interesting to me regarding men and women. What could it have been? Keep scrolling madear!

Photobucket
Kind of makes sense now, right? How many times have you or a female you know noticed a hair out of place or a nail looking 'off'? Now you know why!
The magazine has Miss Katy Perry on the cover and their repeating pages of flubbed dating attempts are always hilarious. Why haven't you read this month's copy yet?

Magazine Weekend: Health Magazine August '09

Happy Sunday!!

Magazine Weekend continues with a health kick today! What better way to end your week and restart the next one than with some handy dandy info and tips at hand?

The clip for today is from Health magazine for July/August 09. The article I found most interesting was about the amazing benefits of blueberries. Though true to form of what is Magazine Weekend, I put it together for y'all on MOJ - you can also check out the slideshow on the Health website here.

If you get your hands on the magazine, you will also notice that they have an awesome piece on losing weight while eating out at fast food (because let's not lie - we all have the temptation for junk surround us more than the healthy lifestyle).
